‘Home Quota post-bifurcation worries students

,
Hyderabad, December 2: The “home state quota” in premier national level institutions like NIT-Warangal and Nalsar-Hyderabad will be distributed equally between Telangana and Seemandhra post bifurcation of the state. Officials of the Higher Education department have submitted a report to the Centre to this effect.

Under the quota, 50 per cent of seats in NIT-Warangal and 20 per cent of seats in Nalsar are reserved for students from Andhra Pradesh at present. Post bifurcation, these institutes will fall under the jurisdiction of Telangana state and Seemandhra students are worried about losing their share of seats.

At present, NIT-Warangal has 740 seats. While 370 seats are offered under the All India Quota, the remaining are offered only to Andhra Pradesh students under the “home state quota”.

In Nalsar, of the 84 LLB seats, 68 seats are offered under the All India Quota and 16 seats under AP quota, and out of 50 LLM seats, 38 seats are offered under All India Quota and 12 under AP quota.

Going by these numbers, each new state will get 185 seats in NIT-Warangal. Similarly, in Nalsar, both states will get 8 seats each in LLB courses and 6 seats each in LLM courses.

Admissions to NIT-Warangal will be given based on rank secured in JEE (Main) and in Nalsar-Hyderabad based on Common Law Admission Test, both conducted at the national-level.

The entrance exam dates for JEE (Main) 2014 and CLAT2014 have already been announced. While JEE (Main) is scheduled for April 6, 2016 in the offline mode, CLAT 2014 is scheduled for May 11, 2014.

“Clarity over distribution of seats in NIT-Warangal and Nalsar-Hyderabad will be given in the Telangana Draft Bill to be placed before Parliament as well as the Legislative Assembly. There will be no impact on Seemandhra students aspiring for admissions in these premier institutions after bifurcation next year. Students should stop worrying over this and concentrate on preparing for JEE (Main) and CLAT for securing admissions,” said a senior official.
