First batch of IIITians gets offers from Infosys

January 1: Students of the first batch of Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies, APIIIT, Nuzvid, will come out with flying colours from the campus in the next few months.

A campus interview was conducted by Infosys wherein the company gauged their potential on different parameters as required by the industry.

There was a buzz on the campus on the recruitment of 64 students by Infosys. The result of the campus interviews was declared a couple of days ago and the company offered a salary package of Rs.10 lakh to some of the selected students.

While the ITC is yet to announce the written examination’s results and conduct interview, the Nuzvid campus opened the account with selections made by the Infosys.

Giving this information, APIIT Nuzvid Director Ibrahim Khan said that the students worked hard towards a goal and won. A total of 800 students appeared for the examination conducted by Infosys. Of them, 102 were selected for interview.

After the personal interviews, 64 students were given offer letters. As many as 29 girls were selected by the company.

More companies like TCS, ITC, Amara Raja Batteries, Tech Mahindra, Maruti Udyog Limited, and Coromandel Paints have informed that they would conduct campus interviews. They were looking for students with CS, ECE, chemistry and other backgrounds, he said.

Infosys selected the students who secured more than 70 per cent in academics and studied CS or ECE.

“Our aim has been to impart quality training. In this backdrop, selection of our students would give an impetus to the institute,” he said.

The students are seen in full vigour and zest after the Infosys gave offer letters to the successful ones. Many more students are hopeful that lady luck would smile on them at the coming campus interviews.

As many as 2,000 students were admitted to various courses offered at the IIIT Nuzvid in 2008.

The number of seats was later brought down to 1,000. Currently, 8,000 students, including first batch, are studying at the campus.

Business schools to oppose UGC bid to curb autonomy

New Delhi, January 1: Leading business schools are likely to oppose a move of the UGC to affiliate them with state-run universities, which will curtail their autonomy, a delegation of management institutions has said.

Deans and chairmen of B-schools offering post-graduate diploma in management (PGDM), described the Dec 23 University Grants Commission (UGC) proposal as retrogade, similar to the December 2010 notification issued by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), which was suspended by the Supreme Court.

A delegation of the Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI), an apex organization representing more than 500 management institutions in India, will be meeting Union Human Resource Development Minister M. M. Pallam Raju and UGC chairman Ved Prakash.

The delegation, comprising chairpersons and deans of B-schools, will appraise them about the collective stand taken by 300 PGDM institutions to protect an autonomy they have exercised for more than 50 years, according to an EPSI press release.

They said the UGC move, if implemented, is likely to halt the current momentum in management education, as an inevitable result of rigid controls similar to those imposed on state universities.

These universities known to be mired in red tape, lethargy and corruption, have little affinity with innovation and professionalism which is a sine-qua-non for business education, the press release added.

The Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS) and Indian Association of Autonomous Business Schools (IAABS), two other apex bodies representing management institutions, have seconded the stand.

EPSI, AIMS and Jaipuria Group of Institutions had filed three petitions in February 2011 against the AICTE 2010 notification. The matter is pending before the Supreme Court.

Formula on CBSE papers

New Delhi, January 2: 2014 brings good news for those who are bad at learning by rote. Central Board of Secondary Education is planning to load papers with all the formulas required to answer the questions.

The board is planning question paper reforms in order to make these more application-based in a bid to discourage rote learning.

It has already introduced Open Text-Based Assessment from 2013-14 for classes IX and XI as part of its question paper reforms. It will now extend it to classes X and XII from 2014-15.

CBSE has set up subject committees, each comprising 2-3 experts, to work on modalities of the question papers for classes XI and XII. The question papers will mostly be application-based and not ask students to show derivation of formulas. "Instead the formulas, themselves, will be given on the question papers and all the student must do is identify the right one to solve the problem," said a senior CBSE official. For science and commerce subjects, too, formulas will be given on the question papers for students to attempt the numericals.

The committees are expected to submit suggestions by February 2014 and the Board will implement the changes from the new academic session of 2014-15 for Class XI and 2015-16 for Class XII.

CBSE has implemented Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation system for secondary level classes, thereby making the teaching learning process more application-based. "CCE is currently limited to Class X. The board is planning these reforms to discourage students from rote learning so that they devote more time to applications-based study at senior secondary level," CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi said.

IIT Kharagpur creates record, more than 1,000 students get jobs

Kolkata, January 2: Kharagpur has set a record among all IITs with more than a thousand of its students securing cushy jobs in the first phase of campus placements, officials said 2nd January. Around 1,010 students of the Kharagpur campus accepted job offers in the first round of placements which ended in December. At IIT Mumbai, there were 900 offers while IIT Delhi got about 750 offers and IIT Kanpur had around 700 offers.

IIT officials said, Kharagpur has achieved a new record with the maximum number of students getting jobs in the IIT system in one phase. In addition to big names like Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Shell, Deutsche Bank, ITC, Schlumberger, Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, Abbott and EXL, start-ups like Flipkart and Housing.com were the ones who made multiple offers in dual figures. The highest package offered was from a US-based company which has signed an IITian for an annual salary of USD 1.25 lakh (around Rs 77 lakh). The highest domestic package was of Rs 37 lakh.

Two new dual degree programs - Financial Engineering and Engineering Entrepreneurship - proved to be a big hit with 85 per cent students from those courses being placed."The programs not only demonstrated acceptability by the industries, but projected the vision of IIT-Kgp for launching novel initiatives," said Prof Sudhir Kumar Barai, in-charge of training and placement, of the institute. The numbers of companies offering placements have also increased this year with 195 organisations coming this time. Barai said another 79 engineering students have accepted pre-placement offers from other companies.

AICTE’s assault on Indian School of Business

Hyderabad, January 2: The Indian School of Business, Hyderabad is rated as one of the top-20 B-schools in the world, but the All India Council for Technical Education continues to label it as an “unrecognized institute” even after losing its regulatory powers to the University Grants Commission recently.

Ironically, AICTE had updated the list of unapproved institutes in AP on its website on December 5 and ISB featured in the list of unapproved institutes though it had lost its approvals power in last May.

In May, the Supreme Court had ruled that the AICTE had no powers to grant approvals to any technical or management institute and its role is only “advisory”. The Council filed a review petition which was dismissed. The blacklisting of ISB by the AICTE in October 2012 had led to protests from academicians and students and the Council seems to have not learnt any lessons from its past mistakes.

Established in 2001, ISB enjoys the distinction of being the first Indian B-school to be ranked among the top-20 global business schools in the Annual MBA rankings by Financial Times, London. Another distinction is that 100 per cent faculty in ISB are doctorates.ISB officials meanwhile took light of the AICTE blacklisting it again.

“ISB is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Less than 5 % of the world’s B-schools are accredited by AACSB. ISB is South Asia’s first B-school to earn this accreditation. ISB’s one-year postgraduate programme does not fall under the ambit of AICTE’s regulatory mechanism. It is for this reason we have not sought its approval,” said Sriram Go-palakrishnan, spokesperson, ISB.

Ever since ISB is established, the AICTE has kept it in its “unapproved list”. AICTE chairman Prof M.S. Mantha said he is not aware of the issue and would take action against officials responsible for uploading the list of recognized and unrecognized institutes on the website.

Chandigarh: After the New Year bash it is time for class X and XII students to gear up for Board examinations as Central Board for Secondary Education, CBSE, has announced the date sheet. Board exams for both classes would begin from Saturday, March 1. On the other hand some of the class XII science students are a little worried about short breaks between the main exams. Though their main worry comes from the fact that many of these students will be facing Board exams for the very first time as in Class X they opted for school based board exams.

"I have opted for both medical and non medical and I feel scared because there are only three days to prepare for Biology after Chemistry Exam and after four days of biology will be Mathematics and," said Nitika Bansal, a class XII Science stream student."I have enough time to prepare for mathematics after Chemistry exam but I still feel anxious as this for the first time I will be giving board exams," said Dhruv Kapoor, a class XII science student.

The main exams for class XII have been scheduled for March 5 (Physics), March 11 (Chemistry), March 15 (Biology), March 20 (Mathematics) and April 1 (accountancy). It is mainly the students from Humanities stream whose exams would be ending by April 17.

‘Home Quota post-bifurcation worries students

Hyderabad, December 2: The “home state quota” in premier national level institutions like NIT-Warangal and Nalsar-Hyderabad will be distributed equally between Telangana and Seemandhra post bifurcation of the state. Officials of the Higher Education department have submitted a report to the Centre to this effect.

Under the quota, 50 per cent of seats in NIT-Warangal and 20 per cent of seats in Nalsar are reserved for students from Andhra Pradesh at present. Post bifurcation, these institutes will fall under the jurisdiction of Telangana state and Seemandhra students are worried about losing their share of seats.

At present, NIT-Warangal has 740 seats. While 370 seats are offered under the All India Quota, the remaining are offered only to Andhra Pradesh students under the “home state quota”.

In Nalsar, of the 84 LLB seats, 68 seats are offered under the All India Quota and 16 seats under AP quota, and out of 50 LLM seats, 38 seats are offered under All India Quota and 12 under AP quota.

Going by these numbers, each new state will get 185 seats in NIT-Warangal. Similarly, in Nalsar, both states will get 8 seats each in LLB courses and 6 seats each in LLM courses.

Admissions to NIT-Warangal will be given based on rank secured in JEE (Main) and in Nalsar-Hyderabad based on Common Law Admission Test, both conducted at the national-level.

The entrance exam dates for JEE (Main) 2014 and CLAT2014 have already been announced. While JEE (Main) is scheduled for April 6, 2016 in the offline mode, CLAT 2014 is scheduled for May 11, 2014.

“Clarity over distribution of seats in NIT-Warangal and Nalsar-Hyderabad will be given in the Telangana Draft Bill to be placed before Parliament as well as the Legislative Assembly. There will be no impact on Seemandhra students aspiring for admissions in these premier institutions after bifurcation next year. Students should stop worrying over this and concentrate on preparing for JEE (Main) and CLAT for securing admissions,” said a senior official.

Pallam Raju bats for higher investment in education

BANGALORE: Public and private investment in higher education should be stepped up substantially and resources should be utilized optimally to scale capacity and improve quality, Union Minister for Human Resource Development Pallam Raju said on Monday.

"State investment on higher education should be raised to 25 percent from 18 percent of the budget on education or to 1.5 percent from 1.12 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), as an increase of 0.38 percent means an additional spending of Rs.25,000 crore by the central and state governments," Raju said at a day-long all-India conference of higher education ministers here.

Referring to the 12th five-year plan (2012-17) thrust on higher education, Raju said under the new initiative in higher education - Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) - the government would provide greater autonomy to universities and colleges for equity-based development and improvement in teaching and research.

"We have proposed strategic funding of higher education to make a difference in the endowment for the sector in the states across the country," Raju said.

Highlighting the benefits of RUSA, Raju said about 300 universities and 8,500 colleges across the would be covered under the scheme with 90 percent of funding from the central government for most needy states like Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, northeastern states and Uttarakhand and 65 percent for other states and Union Territories.

Addressing the conference, Karnataka Minister for Higher Education R.V. Deshpande said the states should draw perspective plan to qualify for funding under RUSA as the scheme was an opportunity to set up more universities.

"RUSA funding should be used for introducing innovative projects in higher education. There should be more regular meetings and interaction between the central government and states to overcome hurdles in implementing the scheme," Deshpande observed.

In this context, Deshpande said the state had achieved a gross enrollment ratio of 26 percent in higher education.

"We seek more weightage in the funding under RUSA so that higher education in the state can reach newer heights in quality with learning eco-systems," Deshpande added.

Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Taroor, Minister of State for Primary Education Jatin Prasada and officials participated in the conference on the UPA government's flagship programme.
