The print photo-scanning application Shoebox, which was acquired back in 2012 by Ancestry.com, has now re-launched under its new owners with several updates, including the ability for users to compile their photos into a family tree.
Shoebox was originally an application which allowed users to scan old print photos and upload them to an essentially isolated social networking site where they would be stored. The app was originally created by San Francisco start up 1000memories but was acquired by online genealogy site Ancestry.com in late 2012.
The application has now launched in version 3.0 at Ancestry.com with several key updates. While users of the app can still scan print photos and crop and edit them, they can now also be mapped, tagged, and annotated with custom captions for adding to the user's family tree on Ancestry.com and saved on the site's private media gallery.
This update therefore enables users to create a comprehensive digital family tree illustrated with old photos.
The space for sharing images is unlimited, and images are private unless shared with others via Twitter, Facebook or email.
However the new version of Shoebox does not currently appear to support images previously stored on the version launched by 1000memories; rather than being transferred across to the new application these previously uploaded images can be viewed at 1000memories.com.
